Lock-in

First off, apologies must be made for the tardiness of this blog update, which has long been overdue. Our termly Lock-In was this past weekend (or rather, two weekends ago), beginning on a beautiful Saturday morning when the entire brotherhood peregrinated to a lush soccer field about a mile from campus. While certainly some of us were less than ecstatic about the early rising and the interruption of the usual grace period needed to recuperate from the previous night's revelries, the smell of freshly cut grass and New Hampshire's curiously fresh morning air quickly awoken us to eager anticipation of the day's activities. Nature's own coffee and hangover cure. With an ample supply of bottled water and enough sports paraphernalia to make any teenage kid deliriously content for a day, we quickly set up games of kickball, soccer, and capture-the flag.

After a fun-filled day at the soccer fields, we returned to the house and ate our fill of BBQ pork and steak catered by a nearby Big Fatty's. Following the delicious, and might I add, manly, meal, we partook in our long-practiced Lock-In tradition of the Lock-In discussion, where much insightful banter was exchanged regarding the future direction of the house. This was followed by yet another important tradition: the Ryder Cup competition, between the 09's, and the 10's and 11's. After a heated contest, the underclassmen emerged triumphant, and the upperclassmen, though dignified in defeat, rest assured knowing that the legacy of pong excellence will continue.

In other news, it has been six days (and counting) since Tri-Kap has been clean and probation-free. To celebrate this newfound freedom, our social chairs, Cameron Sharman '10 and Michael Abendroth '10 have loaded the upcoming weeks with many events that we are all eagerly anticipating. Great Joys

Kappa Kappa Kappa was lucky enough to have won two awards at this year's annual Order of Omega Awards, held in Collis Commonground. First, our house won the overall award for service, after hosting dozens of philanthropic events, working countless hours on projects, and raising thousands for charity.

Fortunately, the College also recognized the man behind these accomplishments: Tri-Kap '10 Joseph Pena. Mr. Pena has encouraged the house to participate in service events and activities and has personally brought an incredible amount pride to the house, but also (although humble as he is), himself.

We congratulate Joe and ourselves for our awards!

In this spirit, our Annual Easter Egg Hunt, held on Easter Sunday this year, was a huge community success. Hundreds of kids came to look for well-hidden eggs in an extremely well-decorated Collis Commonground, while enjoying pizza, snacks, and collective mirth. After every single egg had been found, children collected prizes and sat down with their families for a viewing of "Dora the Explorer: Egg Hunt."

The event was an unmitigated success, thanks to the tireless efforts of Programming Chairs Jinwoo Baik '11 and Blair Randall '11, as well as Joe Pena '10 and all of the brothers who volunteered to make it such a successful event.

A Great Sorrow

R.I.P. Hobie, Fall '07-Spring '09

Unfortunately, our welcome back to Spring Term was marred by the death of a brother.

Hobart Phillibrick Nash, '09, the house's beloved pet dog, broke through his electric fence on Saturday, April 4th, and, despite exhaustive searches by brothers, could not be found.

On Sunday night, we were informed that he had been hit by a police car on Route 10, east of the golf course, and had died instantaneously.

He was cremated, and we had a burial service on our West lawn to commemorate his passing.

We remember Hobie as a dear friend, a playful, adventurous dog, whom we will miss terribly.

Locked In; Killing Sprees

A headline to match the yellow-ist of journalism! Or perhaps a pithy synopsis of the entire Saw franchise.

And speaking of Saw, one thing we saw this past Friday were the gruesome slayings of various genetically altered supersoldiers and their alien counterparts amidst comically accentuated announcements of "Killing Spree!" and "Double Kill!" in our first annual Halo tournament, organized by Andrew Oppo'11 and Phil chair Joseph Pena '10. And, as per always, the promise of laser gun battles combined with the spirit of competition drew a disporportionate crowd from males, ages 18 to 24, which netted us a tidy sum that we summarily donated to some charity. Sumptious!

In other news, Saturday was Lock-In. A friendly game of basketball--the pledges lost miserably--preceded our termly Lock-In discussion. The brothers talked about everything from the possibility of getting a new dog, to the prevention of theft from happening in the house, to respect for the brotherhood and the gentle reminder of the existence of tribunals. On a more sobering note (albeit one that many of us immediately tried to correct after the discussion), we discussed the plans for renovations and brainstormed ideas for ways we could all individually save money for the house.


Finally, some congratulations are in order for two of our brothers for their election onto the Inter-Fraternity Council. Zachary Gottlieb '10 was elected IFC President, and Joseph Pena '10, was elected IFC Vice President of Service. Two beers!

Winter Carnival Update

Despite the herculean effort by Zachary Zehner '09 and the countless man hours poured in by the brothers of Trikap, this year's Winter Carnival snow sculpture came tumbling down hours before its unveiling. Citing global warming and structural instability as the reasons for the sculpture's premature demise, the snow sculpture planning committee, spearheaded by our own Zach Zehner, valiantly redoubled its efforts--lest the old traditions fail--and created... the mound. Or mounds. Humps? Though its interpretation requires a certain critical laxity, the spirit lived on through everyone in the Dartmouth community who came out to celebrate and support Winter Carnival, structural instability and all.

Our dance party on the Friday night of Winter Carnival, cK Bold Moves, was a smashing success. Of the five large campus parties thrown the very same night, the Trikap dance floor was by any measure unsurpassed.

We had a number of alumni, both young and old, as well as current off-campus undergraduates, visit this weekend. Most notably, Peter Curran '81 and his son Alex played an epic series of pong on Saturday night, unabashedly trouncing a number of worthy opponents and showing the current brothers how it was done back in the day.

And speaking of old (relatively) alumni, a few brothers had lunch with Roger Ulrich '77, current professor in Classics at Dartmouth, at Molly's today. He regaled us with Trikap lore of old, and we shared a mutual, yet uneasy laugh about black balls and 'Ghetti night. For many of us, it was still much too soon.

Professor Ulrich was sure glad to see fellow Trikaps on campus!

Paintball, Probation, and Programming

After much prodding by regular blogger Zachary Gottlieb '10, I have heeded the call to arms, taken up the pen--or the keyboard, as the case may be--and revive the humble Trikap blog with a flourish of rhetorical gesticulations, sassy innuendos, and sensibly deployed double entrendres, all in keeping with the stylistic choices of aforementioned blogger. But enough about us! There have been much hustle and bustle among the brotherhood of Kappa Kappa Kappa since the last blog posting that simply must be covered:

On Saturday, the 7th of February, the brothers of Trikap and the ‘09 winter pledges embarked on our annual winter paintballing trip to OSG Paintball in Concord, NH. As you may or may not know, paintballs used in the winter are of a thicker, stiffer sort than the garden-variety paintballs. After many rounds of valiantly waged gun battles between the brothers and the pledges, the embattled combatants found themselves bruised and battered, scarred with splotches of orange and green—but dignities still intact. The OSG guy revealed to us that we were the first fraternity this year to play winter "hard"ball and praised us for our rugged machismo, admittedly, not a compliment that surprised any of us.

Among the top performers of the day were Alex Spinoso '08, whose wild firing-while-somersaulting hit many an unsuspecting pledge; Zachary Zehner '09, whose unnervingly deadly accuracy further confirmed his future as a RAF fighter pilot; Pledge 1 (Waheed Zarif '11), whose uncanny familiarity with the ins-and-outs of urban warfare left many of us slightly perturbed; and Pledge 6 (John Burden ’11), who, through unabashed underhandedness, shot three brothers (including Yours Truly) in a matter of five seconds through a crack in the floorboards, leaving Leonard Lewis ’10 with a sizeable bump on his neck that resembled a grotesque, puckered hickey.

When the brothers and the pledges weren’t busy shooting each other, they rested around a warm and cozy OSG fire pit, warming their frigid toes, cleaning their battle wounds and regaling each other with tales of heroism and glory. It was a day well spent—and a day that will be well remembered, through the welts and bruises left from the paintballs, through the valor and merriment on the field, and through the pictures of various action shots the OSG guy took for us (which I promise to upload later, replete with snarky commentary).

In other news, this past week-and-a-half has seen the brotherhood of Trikap at the dark, abysmal moment of college probation. But—no more! As of today, President Andrew Jean-Louis ’09 announced that Kappa Kappa Kappa is no longer on probation due to “procedural error” and “additional factual evidence,” which is excellent news for our Trikap alumni visiting for this year’s Winter Carnival (which is this weekend, February 13^th). The events leading up to our triumph over Dartmouth’s Organization Adjudication Committee could be seen in an article in today’s D.

Trikap’s brief brush with the law was of course in ample anticipation of today’s Know Your Rights program, featuring attorney at law and Dartmouth Alum George Ostler, who presided over a spellbound audience and informed us of our legal rights if we were to ever tangle with S&S or the Hanover police during our less-than-glamorous moments. There was a big draw from the rest of campus as well as a big turnout from the brotherhood. Between the abundant portions of C&A’s pizza and the hefty legal edification, there was much chewing (over) to be had by all.

WINTER RUSH

We are pleased to welcome six "new members" to our beloved society this winter rush. Winter Rush was deemed a success, with more potential rushes coming out to meet and greet brothers than ever before.
