Valentini Saving Lives

Brother, Nick Valentini '13, was recently honored in an online article about Dartmouth's EMS service. See below for the full article:

"If you experience a medical emergency on the Dartmouth campus, Nick Valentini ’13 might be the first responder coming to your aid. An undergraduate double-majoring in biology and government, Valentini is one of 50 volunteer members of the student-run Dartmouth Emergency Medial Services (EMS). "

Business Plan Competition Achievements

This past weekend myself and Founder, Delos Chang, won first place and $15,000 at the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network's Business plan competition. The start up, Memeja, is a website devoted to allowing users to share their stories through pictures rather then text. The site features a live feed and a ranking system for the stories you would like to share with the internet and Facebook integration for tagging your friends on an inside joke. We're incredibly excited to have won this competition and are looking forward to our future work on the project.

For the business plan competition, I entered a company I have been working on with my friend from UC Berkeley, called Edizen. Edizen matches ambitious college talent with great companies to work on short-term projects. Our vision is a world in which employers judge you for your skills and talents instead of as lines on a resume. We got to the finals of the Dartmouth undergraduate business plan competition and while we did not receive any of the cash prizes, we are excited to move forward with building our company!

NYC Reunion A Success

On March 22, 2012, about 55 brothers, ranging from guys who graduated in the ’60s to recent graduates and current undergraduates on spring break, came together for the first Kappa Kappa Kappa New York City reunion in recent memory. Brothers traveled in from throughout New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and farther for this special gathering.

The 3rd floor private space at Hurley’s Saloon in Midtown served as the perfect venue as we shared stories, laughs and beers and reconnected with each other and the fraternity for over three hours. Everyone was pleased with the great turnout (especially the bar!) and happy to see so many old and new faces. I was happy to report to the crowd that the Tri-Kappa spirit is alive and well with our young alumni and the undergraduates. It was also readily apparent to me that the same is true with the brothers in attendance from the ’80s, ’70s and ’60s. Many brothers expressed a desire to have another NYC event in the near future and to continue them on a regular basis. We hope to see even more brothers next time!

Special thanks to Shawn Hiner-Leamon ’09, Peter Cucchiara ’06, Mark Perez ’02, Sam Braverman ’88, Sean Wilson ’80, Jon Rabinowitz ’74 and Ed Williams ’64 for helping to rally the troops. Look for information about future regional gatherings and gatherings in Hanover coming soon.

The Best and the Brightest

The Brothers of the Kappa Kappa Kappa Society are proud to report that during the winter 2012 term, they bested every other fraternity on campus in terms of average GPA, and a majority of the sororities and other greek houses too. This suggests that Tri-Kap is the most intelligent fraternity at Dartmouth with an average GPA of 3.53/4.00. The statistics also indicate that 31 of the 49 active members logged a GPA greater than 3.5/4.0 and zero members scored below a 2.0. Moreover, the average for all undergraduate students during this term was 3.45.

Due to Andrew Lohse's recent allegations toward SAE fraternity and the Dartmouth Administration, the Greek System, and more specifically Dartmouth fraternities, have received a great deal of unwanted attention and criticism, damning the system as unnecessary, hostile, and barbaric. However, that 50% of the Greek Organizations outscore the Dartmouth undergraduate average and unaffiliated student average (also 3.45) indicates that Greek Life may benefit ones academic performance and promote scholarliness.

We're forever proud to be Dartmouth's first truly literary society.

Lock-In 11F

On Saturday, November 12th, Tri-Kap enjoyed its termly Lock-In, with events that reinforced our tightly-knit and lively brotherhood.  Lock-in kicked off with an epic football game between brothers and pledges, which provided some great competition and the brothers ultimately emerging victorious.  After the match, the brotherhood feasted on choice dishes from Big Fatty's such as pulled pork, ribs, and corn bread, as well as pizza and fresh cider.  While enjoying our spread, brothers hosted a forum for discussion topics regarding both crucial short term and long term issues, that mainly focused on ensuring the protection, stability, and longevity of our home's beloved hallowed halls.  Finally, to cap off Lock-In, we staged our usual mock meetings, in which pledges had the chance to experience a small taste of the pleasures and responsibilities that await them upon becoming a brother; the brothers on the other hand, had the rare and nostalgic opportunity to once more experience the bittersweet pleasure that is pledge term.  The brotherhood continues to foster our bonds through enjoyable events and experiences such as these, as we both  simultaneously uphold our timeless traditions and also look towards the future.

House History

Tri-Kap Class of 2014 and their New Member Educators outside of Rauner
New Member Educators Ben Burke ’12 and Paul Wagdalt ’13 brought the new members of the Class of 2014 to Rauner Library. While there House Historian Marcel Wolff ’12 spoke to the new members of the importance of learning House tradition and history. Then they began looking through boxes of House historical artifacts that are being stored at Rauner. Some of the highlights were a class picture outside of Parker House, a picture of the 1 Webster when it was first built, as well as even some old Tri-Kap T-Shirts.  At the end of the visit the new members became more aware of the great history of Kappa Kappa Kappa that they are now a part of.

Annual Halloween Haunted House

Some Trick-Or-Treaters enjoy the activities on the First Floor

On October 30th, we hosted our annual Halloween on Webster Ave. event for children of the Upper Valley. Having raised over $1400 for the event, this allowed us to host one of the most frightening haunted houses in recent history. Partnerships with sororities like Alpha Phi and Delta Delta Delta gave trick-or-treaters the options of face painting, cookie decorating, and bobbing for apples. All in all, the event was a great success, attracting over 100 kids and their families. We would like to thank the following organizations for sponsoring our event: the Office of the President, the Office of Dean of the College, the Greek Leadership Council, and the Interfraternity Council.

New Table!

One of the most cherished traditions in Tri-Kap is the yearly pong table every class builds each Summer, leaving a bit of themselves behind for future classes. The '12s class are no different, although we may have procrastinated just a bit. The '12s class recently installed our Sophomore Summer pong table. While a little tardy, Hector and I recently put the finishing touches on the table, and with the help of Max David '12, George Bahena '12, and Robbie Moss '12, we mounted the table last Saturday.

It's been a hit with brotherhood and Friday lines on A-table are in the double digits. We plan on converting the '09s table, which was formerly on A-table, into a movable table and I expect we will get years of enjoyment from both.

Puppy

As we approach the fall term we would like to welcome a new member to our Brotherhood, our puppy Hamilton. Named after Tri-Kap's very own Ham Chase '47, at 9 weeks old Hamilton is an adorable, energetic young Vizsla with a love for socializing. Having met everyone from students to police officers, Hamilton is sure to be a great addition to our house.
In the past 5 days he has learned how to sit and give his paw, both of which he does enthusiastically for a treat. His favorite spot so far is the green, where he runs around frantically, only to lazily sprawl out 5 minutes later. We have high hopes for Hamilton and know that he will be a fantastic dog.

11X Cabin Trip

As a break from Hanover city life, the '13 Tri-Kaps made the annual trip to the Class of '66 Cabin. It was refreshing to take a break from our basement scene and relax in the peace and quiet of the great outdoors. It was a time for us to reflect on our goals for the remainder of the summer, as well as on our future as a house.

We had a blast. A group of brothers decided to go on a morning hike into the woods, which proved to be a fantastic experience. A creek near the cabin lent itself as the best spot to relax and watch the wildlife in the morning. The highlight of the night was when we circled up as a class and gave each other hilarious nicknames based on our habits and behavior during the past year. All in all it was a great time, and we hope to do it again in the coming years.
